I met my mom when she was at an event called Mingle with the Mutts. I was not out; instead I was in my shelter cage listening to all of the dogs bark as people walked by, running their fingers across the metal cages, stopping occasionally to read our stories. I was the only quite one, lying down with my nose poking out of my cage. At the time I did not know she was going to be my mom but she stopped and I licked her nose. She turned to a shelter volunteer and I heard her say, “I would like to meet this little guy.” I was lifted out of my cage and was taken outside. I walked right next to my mom-to-be and stopped a few times. Each time I stopped I looked up at her. Mom knows about dog behavior and she was excited that I was already “checking in.” Little does she know that I really wasn’t checking in, I was giving her my weepy look, so she would take me home – it worked! I was home a week later. Mom doesn’t know much about me because I was found wandering the streets. I had a few cuts on my nose, my ears were damaged; they don’t know what happened but it looked like someone intentionally burned them, and I have bare skin around my neck. An animal shelter volunteer actually said they were worried nobody would take me because I look like such a mess. Well, I am now fixed up and cute as hell. You would not believe how many compliments I get from people. Mom thinks I am a flat coat retriever mix or maybe a boarder collie/cocker spaniel/lab mix. Mom and I are together pretty much all of the time, except when she is at work. She goes to work Monday – Friday and I go to doggy daycare Tuesday and Thursday. We walk daily, hike on the weekends, I hang with her when she plays tennis, she taught me about 36 words, I basically follow her everywhere and she takes me on her errands. I took a few agility classes but I learned the commands in like 1 minute and got bored so mom decided that we will try flyball someday; I really LOVE tennis balls. We are a great team and I am so lucky. If you are thinking about adding someone furry like me to your family, please consider a shelter. While the staff is so nice, it sucks being in those cages. |
